Training for the Ageing Athlete

The Rider’s Body Blueprint

Understanding Asymmetry to Unlock Your Potential & Your Horse’s

This is an unmounted workshop for aging athletes & riders of all disciplines

As our bodies change, so do the patterns we bring to the saddle.
Stiffness, old injuries, and habitual compensations can quietly influence balance, communication, and our horse’s movement.

In this interactive, unmounted workshop, you’ll explore how rider asymmetries affect your horse—and how increased awareness, alignment, and choice can support freer, healthier movement for both of you.

  • Have you noticed that one of your legs has a life of its own?

  • Do you prefer one canter lead over the other? Do you have trouble picking up one lead no matter what horse your ride?

  • Have you ever wondered why you can turn one direction so much easier that the other?

  • Is your back aching after a ride?

  • Are you ready for some answers that help you understand?

Then this workshop is for you!!

Humans are naturally asymmetrical.
This is normal, universal, and not a flaw.

Our organs are asymmetrical, our brains are lateralized, we have a dominant side, and our life history (handedness, injuries, jobs, sports, aging) layers patterns on top of that natural imbalance.

Even very fit, well-trained athletes are asymmetrical.

As riders we strive to be more symmetrical.

What changes over time—especially for aging athletes—is not the presence of asymmetry, but how adaptable we remain around it.

A useful way to frame it for ourselves:

Asymmetry is natural

Compensation is normal

Rigidity is where problems begin - Movement and Awareness are how we can understand and change for the better!

What you will learn..

  • Discover the difference between a “Back Mover” or a “Leg Mover” as a rider, & WHY it’s important!

  • Understand why your horse responds to your balance, tension, and asymmetry “My horse seems to be running off of her feet ”

  • Recognize your own habitual movement patterns and where they come from-”My left leg always seems to be too far forward ” OR “I keep losing my stirrup on the right side"

  • Learn simple ways to move with greater ease, adaptability, and clarity that you can re- create on your horse

  • Leave with notes, knowledge and lasting awareness

Hello, I’m Regina Staples. My riding journey began in the jumping arena, but after a major injury, I had to rethink how to continue riding safely and joyfully, while moving to dressage. The injury left me with large unnatural asymmetries I wasn’t always aware of, patterns my body developed to protect itself, which I later realized were restricting both my movement and my horse’s.

That challenge led me to explore Centered Riding®, numerous body awareness methods, and the definition of healthy movement—for both rider and horse. Over time, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for older and sensitive horses, who still have so much to give when supported with understanding and balance. I discovered how our own patterns of movement influence our horses, and how small adjustments in awareness and alignment can make a big difference.

We can’t erase past injuries or the habits they leave behind, but we can create freer, more comfortable movement. In this workshop, I’ll share practical ways to support your horse through your own balance, helping both of you find greater ease, connection, and joy—without riding.
