Meet Regina

Hello, I'm Regina Staples, a horse-crazed child of non-horsey parents who finally wore them down until they agreed to take me for riding lessons.

I began my early riding career in the hunter/jumper divisions. Little did they know, this was just the beginning of a lifelong passion, and a journey that would eventually bring me to the work I am so fortunate to share with you today.

I was incredibly lucky to ride all sorts of horses as a child and young adult: young, old, naughty, complicated, recovering from injury, and some carrying difficult histories of their own. Every horse taught me something.

Then I got my dream job.

I became the main rider at a beautiful sale barn, riding and training young horses to jump and eventually head off to the hunter and jumper rings. I loved every one of them and had enormous compassion for the different horses I was fortunate enough to ride.

And then I fell off.

Not just a "dust yourself off and get back on" kind of fall.

I sustained a significant knee injury that would ultimately change the way I moved & potentially take riding away from me altogether. I was even encouraged to consider giving up riding and finding a new career.

I tried that for a year.

That was enough!

Instead, I turned my compass.

I began studying classical dressage, continued riding, became an instructor, and immersed myself in the study of body awareness and movement. What began as something I needed for myself became a passion in its own right. I became fascinated by rider & horse biomechanics and by the incredible relationship between the two.

I wanted to understand not just where a rider should be, but how the body actually moves to create balance, stability, mobility, and communication.

Because there is a huge difference between holding your body in a position because "that's what it is supposed to look like" and having the awareness and movement options to allow your body to organize itself in a way that actually works. That distinction was critical for me.

After my injury, I had to learn how to work with the body I actually had, not the body I wished I had.

And what I discovered was incredibly hopeful:

You don't have to have an injury to benefit from understanding how you move.

Every rider has habitual patterns. Every rider has areas of strength, restriction, compensation, and greater possibility.

And our horses feel them.

When We Change Our Movement, Our Horses Feel It

For decades, I've had riders come to me with horses they were struggling with horses they were frustrated with, stuck with, or even contemplating giving up on.

Sometimes the horse was tense, upset, even angry.

Sometimes crookedness ruined the rides.

Sometimes resistant, not willing.

Sometimes simply not enjoying the work at ALL.

And time and again, I've watched what happens when we begin looking at the rider's movement as part of the conversation.

A change in balance.

A little more mobility.

Less gripping

More awareness, more listening in the right places....

A different timing starts to emerge

And suddenly, the horse has another option too.

I've watched riders rediscover horses they thought they had lost.

I've watched horses become more willing to go to work, less confusion with clearer signals.

And I've watched partnerships become enjoyable again, a win-win relationship!

That is what continues to fascinate me.

Because the goal isn't to create a rider who looks perfect.

The goal is to create a rider and horse who can move well together.

Why I Created Ride Into Health?

Today, as the founder of Ride Into Health and a Rider Biomechanics & Movement Specialist, I bring together more than three decades of riding and teaching with my ongoing study of movement and body awareness.

My work draws from Centered Riding®, classical dressage, and my studies and experience with approaches including Pilates, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Tai Chi, yoga, and other movement-based disciplines. But perhaps most importantly, it comes from living this myself.

I know what it feels like when your body changes.

I know what it feels like to wonder whether you can keep doing the thing you love.

And I know that sometimes the answer isn't to try harder. Sometimes we simply need to discover another way to move.

That's why I created Ride Into Health: to help riders understand their bodies, develop healthier movement patterns, and discover more possibilities for themselves and their horses.

Because getting older, having an old injury, or simply feeling different in your body doesn't have to mean you're finished.

Different doesn't have to mean done.

You may simply need more movement options.

And when you find them, your horse gets more options too!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some questions that might come up for you about this journey

Does my horse need training rides from you to learn this?

NO! You and your horse learn together to build your partnership

Am I too old to really move better?

NO! I fully believe & have seen it, whether it be you as a rider or your older horse, can move to the best of your ability and investigate that daily. Motion is lotion, so as long as we encourage health patterns it is possible!

Will I be able to practice this on my own?

YES!! this method is designed for you to experience and feel for yourself your progress.

Is it ok if this causes my horse to mess up at times?

YES! We want our horses to be able to carry us even when we may faulter, if they can only move when we are perfect then we aren't giving them the confidence in themselves they need to invite in self carriage.

How long will this last?

Once you have create awareness in your body, you really can't go back! You have it in you. So that awareness can continue to become as refined as you desire, so your ability and progression will continue to grow. The possibility for exploration is endless.

Will this really help my problem?

YES! Quite often riders come with problems that are symptoms of an underlying issue that hasn't been addressed, for the horse or the rider. With this method we get to the core issue that has been stopping your progress and give you tools to start to peel the layers away, so you can move forward!

TESTIMONIALS

Happy Clients

"The hardest stop with any chronic pain management such as CRP(chronic regional pain) or fibromyalgia is to begin the difficult path of exercising through the pain. I would strongly suggest to anyone that they contact Regina to see how her Ride into Health program, could help you to manage your pain and begin a relationship with your horse again."

Glynda & Chief

"Regina's Ride Into Health teaching method, has developed my understanding of horse movement and rider connection more than she could imagine. This learning process has been key to establishing correct and comfortable movement for both me and my horse. My posture is so much better, my hips so much looser, and my horse is so much more willing, free moving, happy and energized."

James & Elli

"What I learned on the 2-day course and in the subsequent virtual sessions was instantly useful to me, and would I believe be useful to a rider at any level or in any discipline of horsemanship. What has always been crucial to me as an older rider, and I’m now 71, is improving my seat. Without that, I don’t think I will be able to continue riding throughout my 70s and hopefully beyond."
